Feedback: February 2009

Points from the February 2009 RNC committee meeting.

Events:  Suggestions were tabled for the Conservation Calendar for 2009 so that every month has a different attraction for both residents and the broader public.  These are featured on the website and in the monthly VeldTalk.

Membership:  E-mail invoices were sent out at the beginning of November 2008 for the coming year with a membership form attached.  Members afterwards reported that they had opened the attachment but had not seen the invoice and therefore had not paid their annual membership fee.  Another invoice will be sent out as a reminder.

AGM:  The suggested date for the 2009 AGM is Sunday 21 June, to be held on the western side of the RNC this year.  The constitution needs to be upated and sent to members for comment before the AGM.

Egoli Granite Grassland (EGG):  About 300 ha of land in Doornrandje have been bought by a developer as an offset for a similar piece of EGG that will be destroyed elsewhere.  This land has been transferred to the Gauteng Province, to be managed by GDACE.  RNC committee members have met with GDACE to discuss the way forward.  This opens up promising Stewardship options for neighbouring landowners.  A member of the RNC will serve on the GDACE committee.

Development monitor:  Feedback was given on four developments:  the Nesongozwi prospecting application in Hennops and Roodekrans, the proposed dolomite mine in Hennops, Cradle City around Lanseria and Mountainview next to Rvierside Estates.  The RNC is registered as an I&AP in the first three developments but Mountainview has not officially launched yet although it has been marketing the development. RSE residents are monitoring the situation and have lodged objections to the lack of proper procedures.

Strategy workshop:  Many changes are taking place in the region and the RNC committee felt the need to put a variety of issues on the table for discussion, prioritising and forward planning.   It was decided to run a day workshop and to invite a wide range of residents to participate.  Date:  21 February.  Facilitator:  Derek Jooste of Weva Consulting.

Communications:

    * The chairman to provide a summary of the monthly committee meetings to be put on the RNC website.
    * The RNC database needs constant updating.  Committee members to each take a batch of names to contact and update.
    * Hills and Dales has a Yahoo group so that any member can send a message.  Yahoo groups suggested for the other areas, for those residents who would choose to belong to it.  This takes the burden off one person having to send messages.

Bathabile School:  Contact as been made with the Plastics Federation of SA to explore the possiblity of establish a recycling centre at the school.

The RNC committee meets once a month at different times and different places to suit members' schedules.

Next meeting:  Saturday 7 March at 10:00 at Sharon Bernhardt's place in Hennops.  RNC members welcome.
